Today, my three year old sat down and ordered waffles for breakfast, as if it were a diner. When I didn’t deliver, we hit melt down status very quickly. Then, the dress I picked out wasn’t “princess-y” enough – that triggered melt down number two. If you have ever been in a wedding, you know that it can be sort of a long weekend with a lot of “wait” time. It’s a series of fun events with a lot of in-between time that is spent prepping, being patient and focusing on the bride and groom. It’s an honor to be asked to be such a big part of someone’s special day but it can be a lot of work. It’s your job to blend seamlessly into the background while doing what you can to make the day go smoothly. But what about when you are 2 years old? How do you deal with it then?
This past weekend Madison (2.5), Sadie (my niece who is 4) and Patrick (my nephew, also 4) were in my cousins wedding. I was very nervous about the weekend because Madison was a little young and as mentioned above, it’s kind of a long weekend. We were extremely lucky that everything went off without a hitch but myself and my sister in law did a lot of prep work to make it happen that way. This week has been the longest on record. These last 7 days were definitely longer than previous weeks – did you feel it?! No?! Just me?! Ok, it might have been because I had two sick kids at home and wasn’t feeling well myself. The week started off with fevers and quickly progressed into hand, foot and mouth aka cocksackie aka the devil’s virus. Oops that last one isn’t real. Anyway – with nobody going to school or babysitters and staying at our house because it wouldn’t be socially responsible to take my kids to a store, it was one truly long week. I had to get creative in our activities just so that we could make it through without wanting to kill one another. We did one MAJOR activity each day that took a lot of time, made a mess and was very fun.
